The Big Moves
Intercontinental Exchange, owner of the New York Stock Exchange, just invested in crypto exchange OKX at a $25 billion valuation and took a board seat. The play: bringing NYSE-listed tokenized stocks and derivatives to OKX's users in 2026. Days later, Nasdaq announced its own partnership with Kraken to distribute tokenized versions of public stocks globally, targeting a 2027 launch. Both deals signal that traditional market infrastructure giants are done testing the waters — they're diving in.
The timing isn't coincidental. Tokenized assets onchain just crossed $25 billion after nearly quadrupling in a single year, driven by Treasurys, private credit, and commodities. Trading in tokenized stocks and ETFs via 1inch's Ondo integration has topped $2.5 billion, making real-world assets one of the few reliable growth engines in a weak crypto market. Northern Trust entered the tokenized Treasurys fund market as onchain US Treasurys exposure neared $11 billion. The tokenized commodity market alone climbed to $7.7 billion, with demand surging for precious metals that offer 24/7 safe-haven asset availability.
Why Prediction Markets Should Care
Traders positioning on crypto adoption and financial infrastructure modernization now have concrete data points: Wall Street's largest players are committing capital and board seats to tokenization platforms. "The roughly $26 billion in tokenized assets onchain today is really just the proof of concept," said BTC Markets CEO Lucas Dobbins. TD Securities' Reid Noch sees the NYSE's tokenized-equities plan as a "market structure" moment — a sign that Wall Street is taking tokenization seriously.
The regulatory environment is crystallizing faster than expected. US banking regulators clarified that tokenized securities face identical capital treatment as traditional assets — no penalty for blockchain rails. The DTCC, Euroclear and Clearstream are pushing for interoperability standards, warning that without them, tokenized securities will face higher costs and split liquidity. Ondo Finance's tokenized stocks platform on Binance won regulatory approval in Abu Dhabi, opening UAE-based financial institutions to tokenized equities. MEXC added 17 tokenized stock pairs through Ondo, while Bitfinex revived USDt-denominated bond issuances on Bitcoin's Liquid Network.
What's Next
Nasdaq is linking EU markets to Boerse Stuttgart's Seturion blockchain settlement venue, aiming to reduce fragmentation in European capital markets. The Bank of Canada and the country's largest banks completed their first tokenized bond trial under Project Samara, testing issuance, trading and settlement using digital Canadian dollars on distributed ledger tech. Swiss crypto bank Amina joined 21X as a regulated banking participant, connecting traditional financial institutions with blockchain-based securities markets.
The race is on: who captures liquidity as tokenized assets scale from $25 billion toward $100 billion. Watch for institutional capital flows into tokenized Treasury funds, regulatory clarifications on cross-border tokenized equities trading, and whether DeFi protocols can break out of their isolation to tap this growing market. The proof-of-concept phase is over — the infrastructure phase has begun.
